Life as a Ski Instructor after Basecamp
We asked them and few questions and this is their response…
What made you choose to do a ski instructor course?
I’d been skiing since I was very young and had always enjoyed simply being in the mountains. After working several years in London I realised that the conventional ‘office’ wasn’t for me. I wanted to do what I loved. I decided to take a gamble on a gap course and never looked back since.
New Zealand, how has it been?
New Zealand is a breathtaking place. It’s a marvel to take in and a truly beautiful country. The people, the culture and the environment are something very unique. I was lucky enough to get a job at Treble Cone Ski School after spending a little time with Interski in Italy following my gap course with Basecamp. I have gained a huge amount of teaching experience and also developed as a skier via training from instructors in many different systems (BASI, CSIA, NZSIA, AUSTRIAN etc). Basecamp was a huge help and is one of the main reasons I find myself out here developing as an instructor.
What’s the plan after your season in New Zealand?
Once the season finishes here in New Zealand I will be returning to the UK for a few weeks and to visit the Ski&Snowboard show at Earls Court (London) before driving down to Val d’Isere for some race training throughout November and then continuing with BASS for level 3 training via their scholarship system set up with Basecamp.
What skies are your currently using to teach on?
I’m currently using Volkl RTM 84’s which are an all mountain ski but with a full rocker and relatively stiff flex. I’d recommend them as an early level basi ski and for teaching on but ideally something thinner underfoot more inline with a GS ski would benefit you long term. Next season I will be using the HEAD World Cup Rebels iSpeeds and the Lange 130rs wide fit race boot.
Best experience since the start of the year?
It sounds cliche to say it, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching skiers from all kinds of backgrounds, ages and abilities. Throwing yourself into the deep end is the only way you will truly learn to grow and adapt as a skier and as an instructor. I’ve also been lucky enough to receive some training from some of the best in the industry within their respective systems. If you ever end up at Treble Cone you’ll know the saddle basin is one of the best and easily accessible ski areas in the whole of the southern hemisphere.
