K2 Big Mountain Chill Series – New Zealand
The largest event in the CHILL Series is back and bigger than ever. K2's Simon Knight is “stocked on the event's growth in size and status and is happy to be teamed up with CHILL again for the event”. There's still Freeride world tour (FWT) qualifying points up for grabs, the same great venues and the prize pool has grown with $4000 in cash prizes up for grabs.
Craigieburn Valley and Mt Olympus play host to the event and their reputation as leading big mountain ski areas provide more than enough terrain for competitors to test themselves and wow the on looking crowds.
The mix of raw South Island alpine terrain, strong competition, and great snow conditions will ensure that the K2 Big Mountain will provide a great spectacle for spectators. FWT judge Dion Newport is “excited about event” and hoping to see some snowboarders follow in the footsteps of New Zealand skier Neil Williman in qualifying for the Freeride World Tour. Entries are limited to 60 places with a strong international field of Swiss, French, North American, German and Australian skiers and snowboarders already confirming along with local skiers, Fraser Mc Dougall, Tom Dunbar, Alex Lynden and big mountain wonder kid George Pengelly. The women's field looks set to be strong with the confirmation of many local and international skiers and riders including Great Brittan's Jess Oundjian and Norway's Julie Scott?Hansen.
Conditions for the event look good with great coverage and snow conditions up high at both Mt Olympus and Craigieburn. Both are forecasted to receive some snowfall later this week.
